Spiritual Communion

There is an age-old tradition of making a Spiritual Communion for those who couldn’t receive Communion at Mass for any number of reasons, such as breaking the Fast before Receiving Communion, which used to begin at Midnight, not being in a state of grace or not confessing a mortal sin before Mass, being married outside of the Church, etc.

Below please find one of the many prayers that may be prayed at Communion Time (instead of coming up “to receive a blessing”.)  It may actually be prayed throughout the day as well.  In order for one to make a Spiritual Communion outside of Mass, say at work, school, or home, one simply needs to get recollected (gather ones thoughts if you will), quiet the soul, and recall a time they received Holy Communion or were before our Blessed Lord at Adoration.  Then, pray the prayer and thank God for the graces received.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My, Jesus, I believe that You are present  in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.
I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.
Never permit me to be separated from You.  Amen.
