In Grade Six, students will. . .

 

RELIGION:

·          Be familiar with saints and holy people who exemplify the principles of Catholic Social Teaching

·          Locate scriptural references

·          Realize and understand that the basic principle of morality is to do good and avoid evil and to live accordingly

·          List and understand some attributes of God

·          Know the major divisions, events, places, people, and lessons of the Old Testament

·          Utilize maps to study geographic locations

·          Explore and give practical examples for  the concept of virtue

LANGUAGE ARTS

·          Read quality literature in different genres

·          Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of spelling, grammar, mechanics, and usage when writing

·          Use oral and written language appropriate to the situation and audience

·          Use of comprehension skills and strategies, such as:  cause and effect, following directions, story structure, making inferences, text organization, and predicting outcomes

·          give oral presentations clearly, audibly, and expressively

·          Study history from the Sumerians  to the Middle Ages

·          Identify and explain the contributions and influences of significant individuals from the Middle Ages to the present

·          Compare and contrast religions, cultures, and customs of various societies

·          Compare the physical features of the earth

·          Study the French Revolution, Nationalism, and the Industrial Revolution

ART

·          Visual sensitivity is promoted with composition in line, distortion of shapes for a purpose, light to dark gradation, intermediate colors,  analogous color schemes, and positive and negative space

·          Balance, the focal point and emphasis in composition

·          Measuring for parallel lines, proportion in figures and faces

·          Shading and one point perspective

·          Make tints and shades

·          Balanced symmetrical designs

·          Symbolism introduced to expand the increasing awareness of the importance of art in history and our society

 

MUSIC

·          Experience in singing in unison and two part harmony

·          Listen to music of various cultures

 ·          Contemporary use of tone color

·          More complex musical notation

·          Expand creativity

·          Refine rhythm skills

·          Lives of well-known performers and composers, and relating music to appropriate time period and style

 

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

·          Major experience areas:  simple games, relays, singing games, stunts, tumbling and apparatus work

·          Reinforcement of movement, body mechanics in the areas of fitness, individual, dual and team sports

 

TECHNOLOGY BENCHMARKS

·          Maintain keyboarding skills

·          25 words at 90% accuracy

·          Integrate typing throughout the curriculum to reinforce typing skills

·          Develop a letter/report using Word Processing

·          Use the  Internet, Databases  and other On-line resources for communication and research

·          Create a Spreadsheet

·          Develop a document using the Paint option

·          Choose an appropriate software program for a given task

·          Learn the strategies for On-Line Searching which aid in the management and movement of data
